From December 1st to December 7th, 2024, youth workers and leaders from across Europe gathered in Trbovlje, Slovenia, for a dynamic training course focused on logical-mathematical intelligence in youth work. Hosted by the Erasmus+-accredited organization ASPIRA, this event explored innovative methods for fostering problem-solving, critical thinking, and logical reasoning among young people. The program aimed to empower participants with tools to engage youth in meaningful and educational ways while creating a space for collaboration, learning, and fun.
Workshops That Inspired Growth
The training started with foundational activities that built group dynamics. Through icebreakers and team-building exercises, we got to know each other and set our expectations for the days ahead. These moments were vital in creating a supportive atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable contributing and learning. One of the highlights was the LEGO® Serious Play workshop, which introduced systems thinking. By constructing and analyzing models, we explored complex systems in youth work, identifying patterns and solutions in a hands-on, collaborative environment. We also focused on gamification, finding creative ways to use different types of games in youth work, from designing problem-solving activities to exploring digital tools that bring mathematical logic to life. Divided in teams each one of us had the chance to create a new workshop on given topics keeping in mind the gamified approach. Another standout session was the application of citizen science and logical reasoning. In a hackathon-style challenge, we applied the scientific method to tackle real-world problems, which sharpened our analytical skills and showcased the power of teamwork.
A Field Trip to the Future City of Acrobats
During the week, participants had the chance to visit Katapult Trbovlje, a hub of innovation and creativity. This inspiring venue is set to transform Trbovlje into the “city of acrobats” by 2034, blending culture, technology, and community. The visit offered a glimpse into how logical and creative thinking can shape the future.
Networking and Shared Success
Throughout the training, we shared meals, discussions, and laughter, creating connections that will undoubtedly last beyond the event. The structured yet flexible program allowed us to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and envision new ways to apply logical-mathematical intelligence in our work with youth. By the end of the week, we left Trbovlje not only with enhanced skills and knowledge but also with a renewed sense of purpose and collaboration. Armed with our Youthpass certificates and a wealth of ideas, we are ready to bring these innovative methods back to our communities.
